Hypothyroidism

Healthy thyroid function is so central to overall health and optimal functioning. The thyroid is not noticed when it works well, and when it does not, nothing works right. It is the regulator of the metabolic function of every cell in our bodies.

Current thyroid testing standards may overlook key aspects of thyroid physiology, as our understanding of the true complexity of thyroid physiology evolves.

TSH testing is the hallmark of thyroid assessment as doctors are taught it in endocrinology. Newer research shows a discrepancy between thyroid receptors on the pituitary gland, which is what TSH responds to, versus thyroid receptors tissue outside of the brain.[1] “The thyroid transporters in the body are very energy dependent and are affected by numerous conditions, including low energy states, toxins and mitochondrial dysfunction, while the pituitary remains unaffected.” It therefore frequently transpires that one can exhibit and experience the many associated signs and symptoms of hypothyroidism without an elevation in TSH despite the presence of wide-spread tissue hypothyroidism. TSH and other standard blood tests can fail to determine the presence or absence of hypothyroidism.

After years of training in thyroid medicine including the use of specialty thyroid testing, known as TRH stimulation testing, Dr. Rahav has become adept at looking at the whole state of the thyroid. Our thyroid assessment includes comprehensive thyroid testing along with key nutrient levels, mitochondrial function, heavy metals, adrenal and liver function. More importantly, hypothyroidism remains largely a clinical diagnosis, and at Rahav Wellness we take the time through comprehensive history, physical, laboratory and clinical assessments to understand each individual’s thyroid health. We endeavor to shorten the gap between when you feel suboptimal, to when you may manifest an overt pathology. We can (and do) move upstream to support the body before its equilibrium is further disturbed.

Thyroid imbalance can be a primary concern or can be secondary to a host of other health concerns. Assessment of a whole human is therefore essential to understanding the thyroid in context. It is the treatment of a whole human, with a focus on the root cause of thyroid dysfunction, that has helped us extend such meaningful support to our patent community.
